Institutional Rhythms: a new approach to NHS energy consumption

A new approach to NHS energy consumption is asking how hospitals make demand for resources. This takes issues of sustainable development to the heart of hospital processes, procedures, and practices and helps identify ways of modifying working arrangements as a method of shaping patterns of consumption and demand.

The research has two central objectives:

  • To map the institutional rhythms of working and mobility practices at two large hospitals.
  • To understand the impact of non-energy policies and priorities on the temporal organisation of those practices.
