Building Healthier Communities: New report explores the role of the NHS as an anchor institution

The Health Foundation, an independent charity committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK, has published a new report assessing the role of the NHS as an anchor institution.

The report explores the size, scale and reach of the NHS, and its unique position to positively contribute to the health of local communities in many ways beyond providing health care. The report examines the role of the NHS in helping to influence the social, economic and environmental conditions that shape good health.

Focusing on five key areas, the report outlines opportunities for the NHS to maximise its contribution to the health and wellbeing of local populations. This includes widening access to quality work, purchasing and partnering locally for social benefit, and reducing its environmental impact.

The report argues that more can be done to support and challenge the NHS to embrace its role as an anchor institution and in doing so, advance the welfare of local people.
