NHS Long Term Plan

As medicine advances, health needs change and society develops, the NHS has to continually move forward so that in 10 years time we have a service fit for the future. The NHS Long Term Plan is drawn up by frontline staff, patients' groups, and national experts to be ambitious but realistic.

The NHS Long Term Plan published in January 2019 and can be downloaded here.

These pages set out the sustainable development commitments within the Long Term Plan and give details on next steps for implementation. Sustainable development commitments are those that will help protect the environment now, and in the future, and improve health.

This means ensuring sustainable ways of improving health and treating patients. A Green NHS can:

  • Reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of providing care
  • Reduce air pollution and contribute to a cleaner environment
  • Reduce the use of single use plastics where appropriate and feasible
  • Ensure that prevention and wellbeing are the focus of all healthcare activities
  • Develop sustainable clinical practices in all specialities and services
  • Prepare and respond to climate change, including weather events and supporting vulnerable people.
