Single use plastics

The NHS creates more plastic waste than most industries (22.7% of total NHS waste is plastic).

The NHS is committed to purchasing, using and discarding less single-use plastic items, as well as using alternatives where available. This can save money as well as being more sustainable.

We have started by eliminating the purchase of single-use plastic stirrers and straws, by April 2020, except where a person has a specific need. By April 2021, we will no longer purchase single-use plastic cutlery, plates or single-use cups made of expanded polystyrene or oxo-degradable plastics. If you’re an NHS organisation, or retailer or provider to the NHS you can sign the plastics pledge here.
