Reducing plastic in the NHS

In the NHS Long Term Plan we committed to reduce the use of single use plastics within the NHS. To begin the journey in reducing single use plastics in the NHS we will:

Target reductions in single use plastics: clinical, consumer and supply chain

  • Remove avoidable single use plastic catering products from providers by 2021 in order to reduce the volume of catering plastics to landfill and incineration
  • Reduce the amount of avoidable single use plastics used in clinical activity, in order to reduce the volume of clinical plastics to landfill and incineration
  • Reduce the amount of plastic packaging throughout the supply chain, in order to reduce the volume of avoidable plastics to landfill and incineration and to support the NHS to become a world leader in this area

Maximise the potential of existing waste management and recycling schemes

Ensure the NHS minimises the amount of avoidable plastics waste sent to landfill and incineration in order to reduce costs spent on managing waste and improve the NHS’s impact upon public health and the environment.

Support innovation and modelling excellence at selected sites

Support the creation, development and eventual uptake of new ideas, to reduce avoidable plastic use across the NHS in order to support the momentum generated through other programme objectives over a longer timeframe.
